I recently subbed manuscripts to two publishers that I have been unable to get an idea about their response times. Odd Dot, an imprint of Macmillan Publishing and Windmill Books, part of Rosen Publishing. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of their response times? I checked in Querytracker, but there wasn't any listing for either company. Thanks!

I didn't know Macmillan took unsolicited submissions. If you sent it via an agent, they should be able to advise you about response time. If you are unagented like me, publishers' submission pages usually have info about response times. In my experience, it's more common not to get a response at all. They usually say something like, "if you haven't heard from us within x months, it's a no".

According to the Rosen website, "Artists and writers may also contact our Customer Service team for information about contributing to Rosen Publishing." This implies to me that they may hire authors and illustrators to work on their project, not that they accept unsolicited submissions. If you did that and they requested your work, send a quick email asking when you can expect a decision after about three months. That is the earliest I would nudge anyone who doesn't list a response time.

I don't see anything that suggests Odd Dot takes submissions. Of course, I may have missed a specific call. The above applies for that too.

Good luck.

Hello Julie and Debbie,

Thanks for your responses. I checked out Odd Dot's and Windmill's websites and they do accept unsolicited materials. After emailing them, I actually got an email from Rosen's customer service that said they would forward my query and ms to their editors, but I found Windmill's submission guidelines, and directed it to them. They focus on SEL stories, which I have several polished ones. Regarding Odd Dot submission directions, they want you to email their editor, Kate Avino, which I did. My 2022 IFW Book Markets reference book also says they accept unsolicited queries. I only sent them a query. Time will tell. Just thought I would poke around. Debbie, you have been very helpful in the past. I hadn't been on the SCBWI website in months. Julie, I'm also unagented. I agree with your assessment too. Macmillan's website does say no unsoliciated mss, queries are okay though. I felt that Odd Dot might be different because of the two references I found and they are an imprint of them.

Well, you've done your research so best of luck with your query, Kenneth. Perhaps you could send an update request to the same address you used last time in 3-4 months?

I just want to clarify that an unsolicited submission could be a query or manuscript. I did not see where they accepted either, but many companies don't specify about queries. I'd do exactly what Julie says. Good luck.
