Khan Academy Kids is a free, fun, educational program for children ages 2-8. Our award-winning app takes young learners on a delightful journey through key skills in math, reading, phonics, and writing. Khan Academy Kids is part of Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization on a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere, with over 130 million registered users across 190 countries.

A key component of our app is a book library with over 300 fiction and non-fiction books. We are  currently looking for writers who can contribute toward  a new series of original picture books featuring the app's very first human characters. Our primary objective with this book series is to provide "mirrors" in which learners see themselves and "windows" through which they see others who are not like them. These books will serve as the basis for an interactive social-emotional learning curriculum that gives young learners the tools they need to understand themselves and their feelings better, and approach human differences with curiosity and appreciation.

**Working with Khan Academy Kids**

1. Impact - We provide authors with massive, global reach. Books in our library are read an average of 250k times per year!

2. Co-creation - We work closely with authors through iterative feedback loops. Our design team illustrates the stories.

3. Specifications - Target readers are first and second grade students. Each book is around 10-12 pages in length (200-500 words).

4. Work for Hire - Khan Academy will be the sole and exclusive owner of any books written through this agreement. However, writers retain authorship — their names are included in every book and in promotional materials.

5. Compensation - We compensate authors at a rate of $500 / book (estimate ten hours per book at a rate of $50 / hour). As a non-profit organization that runs a free app, we are unable to compensate writers at the same rate as established publishers.

6. Time-Frame - Authors will spend approximately 2 - 3 weeks working on each book.

Hi! This is an old post, but I'm wondering if the need for experienced freelancers still exists. I'd be very interested in having contact information. Thanks!

I'm late to the conversation, but I tried the link. I got a page not found message, so I emailed Khan directly. They responded quickly, and said that project was not currently active. Just FYI.
